Frequently Asked Questions
Can I chew regular gum if I wear dentures?
Standard gum is often too sticky and will cling to your dentures, potentially displacing them. It can also be difficult to remove from the appliance surface. Stick to specialized formulas that provide the sensation of chewing without the adhesive grip.
Is xylitol safe for my dental work?
Xylitol is an excellent choice for denture wearers. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and helps keep your mouth hydrated. It is completely harmless to the acrylic and metal components of your removable teeth.
How long should I chew each piece?
Limit your chewing sessions to about 15 to 20 minutes. Extended chewing can put excessive strain on your jaw muscles and the underlying gum tissue. Give your mouth a regular break to prevent fatigue and irritation.
Will gum loosen my dentures?
If you choose the wrong product, the answer is yes. Using a gum that is too viscous acts like a powerful magnet for your dental plates. Select a product labeled as non-stick to ensure your dentures stay firmly in place.
Does chewing gum help with dry mouth?
Yes, chewing stimulates saliva production, which is a major benefit for denture wearers. Adequate moisture creates a better suction seal between your gums and the denture base. This simple act makes your appliance feel more comfortable throughout the day.
